Segio Brio

Sergio Brio (born in Lecce, August 19th 1956) Sergio Brio is a soccer coach and former Italian player, who won fame as Juventus’ main stopper in the Seventies and Eighties.

ON THE FIELD

A stalwart defender, his career began with his local team, Lecce, with whom he played the 1973-74 season in Series C1. In the October of 1974, aged eighteen, he was bought by Juventus; then, after a year in Turin, in 1975 was loaned out to Pistoiese. He remained with this Tuscan team for three seasons, marking 37 presences in Series B, and scoring 5 goals in 59 matches in Series C. In the summer of 1978 he returned to Juventus, where he debuted in Series A on March 18th 1979 (Juventus vs Napoli, 1-0). He stayed in “Bianconero” until 1990, winning 4 Italian championships, 3 times Coppa Italia, one Champions’ Cup, one Cup Winners’ Cup, one UEFA Cup, one UEFA Supercup and a European Cup.

At international level, he is one of only nine players (and six of these are Italian) to have won all three major European Football Club tournaments. Furthermore, he is one of only five players (four of whom are “Juventini”), to have won all of the International soccer tournaments. In Series A he battled steadfastly in the Juventus lines, totaling 243 matches, and 16 goals. In all, he played 379 games for the Piedmont squad, and scored 24 goals. Brio customarily played in short-sleeves, even through the cold winter months. He wore the colours of the national Olympic soccer squad, but never those of the National First Team, his place being taken by other players of his period: originally by Collovati, and later by Vierchowod.

AS COACH

Second in command to Giovanni Trapattoni with Juventus and Cagliari, in the early Nineties. Gained first hand coaching experience in the Jupiter League, the highest Series of the Belgian Championship, as trainer of Mons, 2003-2004.
